#1: There are two abortion pills to take in the process
Many women don’t know that there are actually two different types of abortion pills involved in the medical abortion process: mifepristone and misoprostol.
First, misoprostol blocks the progesterone hormone, causing the uterus lining to thin and preventing the embryo from growing and staying attached to the uterus. Misoprostol is taken 24 to 48 hours later after taking mifepristone, causing the uterus to contract and expel the embryo through the vagina.
#2: It’s recommended only for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy
Medical abortion is not for every woman but is only recommended by the FDA for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy. After this point in pregnancy, going about medical abortion could increase the risks and side effects significantly.
